- Note: While TotalBoat Aluminum Boat Topside Paint can be used above or below the waterline, it contains no antifouling properties. We recommend TotalBoat AlumiPaint AF antifouling bottom paint for maximum protection against barnacles, shellfish, slime, and weeds.
Do I Need to Etch & Prime First?
It's no secret that it's hard to get paint to stick to aluminum. Success usually involves sanding, etching, and applying a toxic chromate primer.
With TotalBoat Aluminum Boat Paint, etching is optional and may improve adhesion, but what's most important is that this unique paint is designed to be applied directly to shiny, bare aluminum. It has an advanced, polyurethane formula that makes it bond strongly and durably without etching and priming first. It's also more environmentally friendly because it's chromate-free, with an extremely low VOC content and almost no odor.
The surface prep is actually fast and easy for bare aluminum in good condition—just clean thoroughly to remove any dirt, oil, grease or contaminants, then dry completely. If the bare aluminum has a dull, oxidized look, use 220-grit to sand until shiny, remove sanding residue, wipe with denatured alcohol or use TotalBoat Aluminum Boat Etch Wash as directed, and allow to dry completely before immediately applying TotalBoat Aluminum Boat Paint.

My mast and boom had been painted many years ago and looked really beat up. My boat is a 1977 Islander 32. The orbital sander with some 220 grit made quick work of the flaking paint. I wiped it all down with denatured alcohol. The new paint went on easy and dried quickly. I just did the lower sections that you can see but some day I'll pull the mast and do it all. In the meantime, it really looks sharp!

I purchased one quart of TotalBoat Aluminum Boat Topside Paint to test for ease of application using my old spray guns. I test applied over prepped bare aluminum and previously painted aluminum. I am very happy with the results so far. The paint was easy to apply without thinning using HVLP gravity gun. I was able to achieve 6 wet mill application (I recall instructions call for 7) but I think 6 is the max I could do with sags. The paint dried reasonably quickly (wintertime in Florida so unheated temp was just barely above 50F) and would have benefited from heating. I did get some fish-eyes where I sprayed onto unsanded paint, so make sure you prep well! A second coat was easily applied atop the dry-to-touch first coat without sanding. After several days curing (paint didn't require that long, I was busy doing other stuff), I sanded with 220 (instructions say 320 but I couldn't find my stash) and applied a final coat. You will want to use 320 to reduce sanding swirls. Final matt/satin finish looks great. After about a week cure time, I can mar the finish with a wooden dowel, but I am unable to scratch through to metal. I do wonder if this final finish would benefit from addition of a hardner, but I assume none is available for this easy to use water based product.

Although I cannot comment on durability YET, I can say I really like the way it handles. Having used several OEM john boat paints this TB stuff is a little easier to handle (thicker) and is water based. Dries timely...not too fast, not too slow. If it takes a lickin in the creek, I'll really like it!
