Interlux Perfection Plus Varnish is a clear, two-part polyurethane high-gloss finish for wood and epoxy. This high-clarity, high-gloss marine varnish provides superior UV protection and prolonged resistance to chemicals and abrasion.
The Plus formula is Interlux's most durable, a finish that lasts up to four times longer than conventional one-part varnish products. Designed for above the waterline use, the chemical cure of Perfection Plus provides superior resistance to fuels, oil and mild acids and alkali spills and is fully compatible with oily woods such as teak.

Preparation
BARE WOOD: Sand with 80 grade (grit) paper. Wipe with Brush Thinner 2333N. Apply a sealer coat of Perfection Varnish reduced 10% with Brush Thinner 2333N.
PREVIOUSLY PAINTED SURFACES: With Perfection Varnish: In Good Condition Sand surface with 120-150 grade (grit) paper and remove all dust. In Poor Condition If varnish is badly checked or peeling, remove finish to bare wood with Interstrip Semi-Paste 299E.
CLEAR EPOXY: Allow epoxy to cure for 5-7 days. Begin by scrubbing well using soap and water and a stiff brush. Wash down with fresh water. Wet sand with 180-220 grade (grit) paper. Wipe with Fiberglass Solvent Wash 202.
Method Apply at least 5-7 coats on bare wood and a minimum of 3 coats on surfaces previously coated with Perfection Varnish. Sand between each coat with 220 grade (grit) paper. Remove sanding residue with a rag dampened with Brushing Thinner 2333N.
Mixing Mix base and curing agent thoroughly at the specified ratio.
Thinner Brush/Roller - Brush Thinner 2333N.
Cleaner Epoxy - Fiberglass Solvent Wash 202. Bare Wood - Brush Thinner 2333N.
Ventilation and Humidity Control It is best to paint on warm, dry mornings. Cold weather retards the drying and humidity can spoil the gloss.
Brush Use a natural bristle brush.
Roller If rolling, use a thin nap roller and "tip-off" with a clean natural bristle brush.
Other Perfection Varnish can be thinned up to 25% for spraying applications using INT-2316N Spray Reducer.
When applying Perfection Varnish to clear epoxy, follow instructions carefully. Failure to do so will result in poor dry and loss of adhesion. Avoid painting in direct sunlight. Product temperature should be minimum 10 deg C/50 deg F and maximum 29 deg C/85 deg F. Ambient temperature should be minimum 10 deg C/50 deg F and maximum 35 deg C/95 deg F. Substrate temperature should be minimum 10 deg C/50 deg F and maximum 29 deg C/85 deg F.
Compatibility/Substrates Apply to clean, dry, properly prepared surfaces only. Do not apply over one part paints.

TRANSPORTATION,STORAGE AND SAFETY INFORMATION
TRANSPORTATION: Perfection Varnish should be kept in securely closed containers during transport and storage.
STORAGE: Exposure to air and extremes of temperature should be avoided. For the full shelf life of Perfection Varnish to be realised ensure that between use the container is firmly closed and the temperature is between 5 deg C/40 deg F and 35 deg C/95 deg F. Keep out of direct sunlight.
DISPOSAL: Do not discard tins or pour paint into water courses, use the facilities provided. It is best to allow paints to harden before disposal.
Remainders of Perfection Varnish cannot be disposed of through the municipal waste route or dumped without permit. Disposal of remainders must be arranged for in consultation with the authorities.

Burried in the tech instructions is the following "Do not apply over conventional paints or flexible construction". I presanded as instructed and then clean wiped with 2333 thinner and the thinner began to lift the existing epifanes multiple coats of spar varnish. A phone call for tech advice reveals that the quoted sentence means Perfection Plus cannot be applied over any single part coating. Since it is hazardous material I cannot return it for credit. This limitation should be clearly set forth to save someone else the need to refinish their entire transom, etc.

Perfection lasts 3 to 4 times as long as traditional spar varnish. On a horizontal exterior surface, spar varnish has a life of 3 to 4 months in our climate, whereas Perfection will last about a year in full sun. Where protected from the sun, Perfection can last 5 to 10 years. We use Awlgrip T0031 reducer with Perfection, instead of Interlux reducer. I works better in hot weather and seems to bubble less; and be a little slower to evaporate. When applying Perfection varnish in 90 degree weather, you gotta work fast 'cause i the brush will drag in any area 30 seconds after you lay down the varnish. It can help to have a spotter with a light to immediately spot misses or "holidays" or runs before it's too late to brush them out. On large, flat surfaces (like a transom), lay down the Perfection with a 6" or smaller white fine-foam roller with rounded ends. Use vertical strokes to lay down a THIN coat (this stuff runs like crazy) of Perfection, and tip it with horizontal strokes. Spread it out thin or it will run. If it's hot, go like crazy like you are in an old silent movie. Perfection is clear, so the finish may be lighter than desired, but it can be applied over spar varnish to give traditional color. Sanding-sealer then 3 coats of varnish. Wait a week before applying Perfection over varnish or it will lift the varnish.

I can not apply Perfection Plus varnish without it full of air bubbles. I have tried no thinner 2333N, little thinner, lots of thinner. I know how to apply varnish by brush. I have been doing it for 50 years but I have never had a job turn out so bad. And this was going to be my show case Whaler and now I don't want any one to see it. I am on my second Qt, hoping something was wrong with the batch but the new material is just as bad.

Tried several ways to apply--roll with foam and tip, brush with foam brush, brush with high dollar bristle brush, brush with chip brush. Thinned or not thinned. Read and re-read directions, emailed for tech help. No matter what, I get a million tiny bubbles. As soon as this last one sets I will sand again and be trying coat #7. Just about out of my second quart and too expensive to keep experimenting. I have seen good finishes done with this product but I will never buy it again.

I purchased this varnish in order to do some tests for a larger project. I found the packaging very good, the mixing easy and brush application very satisfactory. Good coverage, great wet-out and a perfect urethane gloss. Adhesion appears to be excellent and in six months outdoors it has mainatined a perfect gloss so I expect to see it around in 4 years or so. Like many finishes the application and drying take some getting use to and clibration. In order to get the smooth gloss one has to use it at cooler temperatures around 60 to 65. Much warmer and it drys too fast for good wet-out. Next problem is to get it cured before the evening dew gets to it. As a yacht varnish to be used outdoors it is very difficult to find the right "window" of time and temperature to assure it is dry prior to the evening dew. Too early in the day and the substrate is still damp, too late and there is moisture damage overnight. I ended up covering the job the night before to keep the surface dry, putting the Perfection on as soon as the fog cleared and then forcing the drying with IR lamps and covering the forced coating for the next evening. Beautiful!
