TB-0927-K - High Build Kit Gray GLTotalBoat Epoxy Primers provide excellent finish adhesion & corrosion protection on fiberglass, steel, wood & aluminum. Surfacing Primer is ideal for surfaces that are ready to be topcoated. It ensures adequate filling & lets you build up to 12 mils wet in 3 hrs. High Build Primer has a denser formula to fill pinholes & small surface defects without extensive fairing or applying a surfacing primer over it. Both primers have a simple 1:1 mix ratio, easy application by brush, roller or spray, fast dry times, optimal sanding qualities & can be overcoated with 1- or 2-part urethane coatings.
Primers are available in Gray & Off White, in Quart and Gallon Kits. Quart Kits include 1 Qt Base & 1 Qt Activator. Gallon Kits include 1 Gal Base & 1 Gal Activator.

- TotalBoat 2-Part Epoxy Primers are for marine use prior to the application of a topcoat. Their VOC levels of <420 g/L (Surfacing Primer, admixed) and <350 g/L (High Build Primer, admixed) meet all current guidelines.
The recommended thinner is TotalBoat Epoxy Primer Thinner 200 (sold separately) formulated to extend wet film flow, especially when applying primer through a spray nozzle. This reducer can also be used as a surface prep cleaner, and as a solvent for cleaning equipment.
Surface Preparation
Fiberglass/Wood: Abrade with 100-150 grit sandpaper. Solvent wipe with TotalBoat Epoxy Primer Thinner 200 to remove surface contaminants. Follow with a dry, clean, lint-free cotton rag, and allow to dry completely.
Steel: Sandblast or grind to SSPC-6 Commercial Blast. Remove residue with a vacuum or air hose, solvent wipe with TotalBoat Epoxy Primer Thinner 200, and allow the surface to dry completely.
Aluminum: Sandblast, grind, or sand the surface with 100-150 grit sandpaper, then use TotalBoat Aluminum Boat Etch Wash, as directed. Dry the surface completely and apply TotalBoat 2-Part Epoxy Primer within a maximum of 4 hours.
Previously Primed or Painted Surfaces: Ensure that the substrate is a 2-component system. If no corrosion byproducts are present, abrade the surface with 100-150 grit sandpaper to remove gloss. Wipe away any surface contamination with a lint-free rag wetted with TotalBoat Epoxy Primer Thinner 200. Follow with a clean-dry, lint-free rag to ensure no contaminants were spread or left behind.
Mixing
Shake or stir the primer base well such that no material is settled on the bottom or sides of the can. Mix 1 part primer base with one part primer activator by volume. Allow an induction period of approximately 30 minutes prior to reduction and application. See Epoxy Primer Thinner 200 data (below) for details on thinning the product, if desired.
Application
Spray Application: SURFACING PRIMER: After induction period, reduce 15-25% with TotalBoat Epoxy Primer Thinner 200 for desired application and film thickness control. Coats can be applied at 3-4 wet mils building up to 12 wet mils thick, waiting 1-3 hours between coats. For single-coat application (3-4 wet mils). it can be sanded after 4 hours. HIGH BUILD PRIMER: After the induction period, for desired application and film thickness control, reduce 15-25% with TotalBoat Epoxy Primer Thinner 200. Apply with a 1.8-2mm spray tip. Coats can be applied at 3-4 mils wet each, building up to 20 wet mils thick, waiting 1-3 hours between coats. For single-coat application (3-4 mils wet), it can be sanded after 4 hours.
Roll/Brushing Application: Thinning should not be needed, but if reduction is desired for flow, use TotalBoat Epoxy Primer Thinner 200. If rolling, use only 1/8-inch nap epoxy/solvent-safe foam rollers. Subsequent coats can be applied every 1-3 hours, up to 12 wet mils thick (Surfacing Primer) or 20 wet mils thick (High Build Primer).

Warning: Do not apply paint materials to surfaces less than 5°F above dew point, or to surfaces warmer than 125°F. Ambient air and surface temperatures should be above 45°F and below 125°F.

Thanks you guys for helping me get the right product after ordering the wrong product. The cans looked identical but the high build surface activator was very different than the surfacing activator. But we got it figured out now. I did notice that the two coats of high Build primer with the surface activator on deck started to bleed some white Onto the lower hills dark blue color a year of sun exposure.. I thought Epoxy paints were hard enough not to Break down over time. What would you recommend for a topcoat Over the primer for the decks ?

I am a first timer restoring an old family boat. After much patching and fairing, I used the 2 part hi-build primer which worked great. Thinking I would use the TotalBoat Topcoat I went over that primer with the 1 part TotalBoat primer. Then I found out that TotalBoat doesn't mix custom colors and decided to use Alexseal 2 part topcoat. Even though the 1 part primer says "compatible with 1 and 2 part topcoats" I found out it comes off when you put the Alexseal over it. I had to sand off ALL of that 1 part primer and go with the 2 part TotalBoat primer that I am reviewing here. I love this primer because it is easy to roll and sands to glass smooth finish with a 320 grit. I have tried to rub it off with every solvent I can find and it doesn't go anywhere. I highly recommend this primer but have to warn against the 1 part TotalBoat primer.

First I need to say that I LOVE this stuff in GREY - I went with high build grey and can say it is fantastic (and actually worth the cost). It goes on great (although I did find it needed a bit of thinner to get it to roll and tip well) - the best part is it's "sand-ability". The grey primer builds fast, fills quickly and best of all sands very well with a hand (block) or with random orbit. I went for an overcoat of my prep'd grey surface (sanded about 80 grit) - just needed a final coat to fill grain. I went with the white (same catalyst) to make it easier to overcoat with a light color paint. I found that the white is MUCH harder and is far more difficult to sand. I will NOT buy the white primer again (the difficulty in sanding makes it just about value-less for me - so it's an expensive lesson!!!) Sorry J'town, but it does not perform nearly like the grey. I got in touch with J'town and they acknowledge it is harder to sand and recommend sanding very soon after application. SO ---- only 1 star for the White....I will have no use for the remainder of the paint - so it's a "throw away" of about a hundred bucks.....All that said, I WILL buy the grey in the future. I honestly think that it should not be in the product line-up. (or at the very least make it very plain that it is nowhere near the performance of the grey!). Makes me sad to have to give this stuff a bad rating - but honestly I'd stay away from it, makes a lot of extra work.

I reduced and sprayed with a gun with a 2.0 tip and got desirable results. Put one coat on some areas and three on others. Waited until next day to sand, Started with 120 on a large fairing board. Sanded well. Two quart kit marginally enough to do 12 ' hull.

In retrospect I should have used the Fiberglass Surface Prep on the outside of the canoe. I thought I had sanded literally every surface but there were a few small spots of virgin that the primer didn't adhere to. No big deal, but understand this isn't a stick-to-anything etching primer. Sprayed using the twice-dreaded Harbor Freight $15 gun, thinned 20%. It sprayed well with little orange peel and good coverage. I obtained 186 sf of coverage in three coats. It sanded easily, very similar to West 410, maybe even easier. (I sanded the first two coats with 150, then the last coat with 220.) DOES NOT FILL PIN HOLES. Get that out of your mind. All pinholes must be filled before application, although they're much easier to see after application. (That's why I did 2 coats, sanded, then the last coat.)
