Epifanes PP Varnish Extra is a two-component varnish based on alkyd resin/isocyanate that combines fast dry time with excellent impact and abrasion resistance. A Recoat time as short as 3 hours makes PP Varnish Extra ideal for situations where high build is required in a short time. It can be used on all types of interior and exterior wood as an insulation coat, sealer, or filling coat for one-component or two-component synthetic or polyester based varnish systems. PP Varnish Extra is an excellent insulating sealer for oily, greasy and vaporous woods such as Teak and Iroco. For maximum UV resistance it is recommended to topcoat with two or more coats of Epifanes Clear Varnish, Epifanes Woodfinish Gloss, or Epifanes Polyurethane Clear Gloss Finish. Use with Epicanes PP Varnish Thinner.

Temperature should be between 50 degrees F and 85 Degrees F with the air humidity below 85 percent. Avoid painting in too much wind or sun. A rapid loss of solvents will occur under these conditions and will decrease the flowing ability. Add thinner up to the specified percentage to compensate for the faster release of solvents.

I restore vintage hydroplanes and also custom woodwork, so a varnish needs to be easy to apply, tough and most of all looks. I use a lot of 2 part finishes but never with a varnish, so I decided to do some research, contacted Epifanes and decided to give it a try. If you just open the can, mix and apply without doing your research it will fail. My first task was to mix by weight which is the most important step. Thinning and obviously surface prep and quality tools are a must. Learn good rolling/tipping methods and you will be ok. I use between 3-4 coats within the recommended time frame. I do this for a living and very happy with the results both short and long term.

I have a 58 foot Trumpy, 50 yr old wooden vessel. Did a major strip and refinish on all exterior varnish surfaces. They are all teak. Used PP Varnish for the first 3-4 coats then switched to Epiphanes High Gloss varnish for the next several coats. Followed manufacturers instructions and spec sheets. The PP has failed in a number of areas within the 4 months. Specifically at a number of seams and joints it looks like its lifting or separating between the PP and the high gloss....Not sure why this is, but this is a major varnish job that is basically ruined. It will take 80+ hours labor to correct the situation and even then I'm not sure it won't continue to fail in other areas. Took pictures, sent then to Epiphanes and Tech Support in Maine and they said "Not enough coats..."....A disappointing lack of interest from Tech Support and no solution offered other than try some Radidclear to built up the failed areas and recoat....A side mention that this product averages in cost $200 for set of cans I I think we used $1,000 worth of the product. Wow! When you consider the results and response from Epifanes... I would tell one to seriously reconsider using this product on anything other than small items such as oars or railings. You may be very disappointed in the results.
